The Reja Revolution Has Begun

What a difference a week makes, eh? Yesterday, the ‘new’ Lazio was thrust into action against a strong but flailing Parma side and we emerged from the battle waving the biancoceleste flag proudly after securing an eye-catching 2-0 victory. The title of this post is rather optimistic as I don’t want to be the one raining on your parade, but I would like to provide a warning drizzle; there is still a lot of work to be done.

I was nervous to say the least yesterday. I am as realistic as they come and I sat down to watch the game with no expectations, yet at the same time, I was hoping beyond reason that we could pick up one win out of what I see as a necessary five to stave off the threat of relegation.

That we did; it wasn’t pretty at times and on occasion, it looked unlikely but in the end, we did just about enough to merit the three points. The streams were not the best yesterday but there are a few people who deserve a special mention from what I saw.

I would be tempted to say that we rode our luck a bit and that we could easily have lost this game had the opposition capitalised on their chances but that would be discrediting super Muslera. He is not the finished article but when he is, he will undoubtedly be one of the world’s best as he is already setting Serie A alight with his shotstopping. As always, he came up with the some fine stops yesterday when there was nothing on the scoreboard and that was crucial. Once we seized the initiative, we were too hot to handle. We were a threat from set-pieces and Stendardo proved why he is such an asset at both ends of the field. Ledemsa looked short on match fitness, as you would expect but there is no denying that his tirelessness and graft helped us immensely while Floccari demonstrated why I rate him so highly; his movement bamboozles defenders and we saw glimpses of why he is the perfect replacement for Pandev too. Rocchi and subsequently, Zarate looked like different players in his company.

I refuse to get carried away with this result but the signs are encouraging. I would be thoroughly disappointed if we are not safe with games to spare as I genuinely think this team has the quality to climb the table, slowly but surely. However, a win against Parma, considering the current form of both sides is not something to shout about. The game only became easy once Jimenez was dismissed and tougher trips lie ahead; such as Palermo next weekend. Away. Forza Lazio!
